Firewood and You
Our Wood
JD's Firewood sells unseasoned wood year around and seasoned wood at the start of January. Our cords are full cords, we do not sell face cords*. Each delivery has a different ratio of wood. All of them are mixed hardwoods and come from the list below.
Each delivery will have a mix of these woods:
Ash
Oak
Cherry
Locust
Beech
Maple
Sycamore (american)
*A face cord is an estimated amount of wood whereas a full cord is measured out as 4x4x8 (128 cubic feet)

Unseasoned vs Seasoned
Seasoned firewood means that the wood you are ordering has been split and sitting in direct sunlight for at least six months. This is wood that is ready to burn as soon as delivered and many pieces have a noticeable gray shade to them.
Unseasoned firewood is freshly split and has to be set, preferably off of soil, aside to season on its own. Many people burn unseasoned wood in insert and standalone stoves. This is not advisable because of the creosotes that are emitted from green wood. Continual burning of fresh wood can greatly increase the risk of chimney fires.

Hardwood vs Softwood
To get the most out of your fire it is important to make sure the wood you are buying is hardwood. Hardwoods come from denser trees that when burned last longer and burn hotter. Many softwood trees will give off a foul odor or may not burn as well and it is important to know the difference so you do not get taken advantage of.

Face Cord vs True Cord
The two most common ways to measure firewood is by the "Full Cord" or "Face Cord". The difference between the two is that a full cord of firewood is an amount of wood that fills a space equal to eight feet long by four feet high by four feet deep. A standard length for firewood in a full cord is 16" long and most of the time a full cord of firewood will consist of three rows stacked four feet wide and eight feet long.
A face cord of firewood is equal to a single stack of firewood that measures four feet high by 8 feet long by however deep the depth of the firewood is. Log length in a face cord of firewood varies and there isn't a standard length.

What Sets Our Firewood Apart
Above all we pride ourselves with quality at JD's firewood. You will never find soft wood as listed above in one of our deliveries. We also are a small operation and start splitting wood in the fall. Once complete we let the wood season the entire spring and summer. This guarantees a delivery that will burn as soon as you receive it.
Another benefit of us being a small company is that we hand load our firewood for each delivery. This process takes longer but the alternative is a front-end loader which will not only grab the firewood but also a significant portion of the rocks and dirt under it. Many customer's compliment us for this alone as they don't have a wheel barrow of debris to dispose of after the wood has been stored.

How Much Wood Do I Need?
If you're new to firewood burning you might be confused by the terms and quantity of wood you will need. As with everything the answer is it depends. Below I've listed out the different quantities people buy for their needs.
Half a Cord
You have a fireplace or fire-pit and like to have fires when company is over. A half cord is about 300 pieces and will give you plenty of wood to start out.
Full Cord
Usually bought by someone with a wood burning stove but not used as the primary source of heat for the house. Depending on use a cord is usually enough to last a winter but only as a supplementary source of heat.
1.5+ Cord
This is for the firewood buyer who relies on their wood burning stove to provide heat to the house. If this is the case we would recommend at least 2 cords of wood for each stove in the house and a cord of unseasoned that will be used if it was a cold winter.

How To Store your Wood
Many customers ask what the proper way to store wood is. This is especially true when buying unseasoned firewood. The most common misconception is that you need to put a tarp over the wood to prevent it from getting wet. This is actually the opposite of what you want as a tarp will trap moisture and stop the sun from reaching your stockpile.
The best thing to do to properly season your firewood is to have the wood in a place that receives a lot of sunlight and to keep it a couple inches off of the ground uncovered. By keeping it in the sun the wood will bake and season properly and having it off of the ground will let it air when it does rain. Tarping leads to fungus, mold, and soggy wood.
Some of our customers use sheds which literally bake the wood which is a great way to keep moisture out and the wood seasoned well but the downside is that most sheds aren't big enough for more than one cord so if you're planning on burning a lot of wood this could be a pricey method which in the long run doesn't do that much more than open airing.
